Spinning Cotton

Nearly 300,000 people work in Tamil Nadu’s cotton spinning sector. It is a crucial part of India’s $137 billion textile industry, with links to major retailers around the world. For its mainly female workforce, conditions are often very poor. Many live in company-owned hostels with little freedom of movement. Sexual harassment, low pay and excessive working hours are common. Yet women are coming together to drive forward change and better their situation.
